Peddle Thorp Architects undertook the interior store planning and fixture design of the 3 top floors in the newly refurbished flagship MYER store in Melbourne. This department store receives the “Store Design of the Year Award” at the 2011 Oracle World Retail Awards.

Myer is Australia’s largest department store group and has been a market leader in Australian retailing for the past 100 years. Myer offers the largest range and the latest national and international brands across a number of categories including: women’s and men’s apparel; fashion accessories; children’s-wear; cosmetics; home-wares; furniture; toys and electrical goods.

The project included the design and implementation of level 5, 6 and 7 floors layout. Level 5 showcases the home-ware products including beddings, cookware, and wedding registry. Levels 6 and 7 showcase electronics, home entertainment and the gaming collection.
Through a collaborative design process involving Myer Design, and shop-fitters, our challenge was to create a unique retail experience for each environment, developing specific design theme on each floors. The organic contemporary level 6 and 7 have been design as interactive futuristic spaces. The designer introduces the notion of path and discovery into the planning strategy to enhance the consumer experience.

Through the design of winding gondolas, display tables and curved shell cabinet, products are revealed along curved and intersecting alleys multiplying showcase and merchandising opportunities. Gondolas and table have been design to optimize product showcase toward consumers as they’re walking down the main alleys making secondary path attractive and inviting visitor’s to explore multiple pads.

Fixture design and planning also adapt to the striking and complex base built environment. The gaming shell units following in heights the tilted faceted timber ceiling introduce therefore movement and create a playful gaming space. Wall unit designs respond to dynamic tilted wall cladding lines. And the curved shell fixtures create intimate sub retail space, controlling daylight from the multiple skylights and window atriums.

For level 5 design, Peddle Thorp introduced simplicity and neutrality as key element for effective home-ware product presentation. White and black have been used as primary color for the fixture and environment design, referring to Myer branding code. The concept of “frame” runs across the entire floor as a key geometry structuring and binding the multiple pads together. This simple approach emphases the focus on the brands, by introducing an appealing and modernist discreet design.

ADD LIST OF ACTIVATION SERVERS TO HOSTS FILE

1. Navigate to Command Prompt in the Accessories folder.

2. Right click on Command Prompt.

3. Select to "Run as administrator" and click Yes on the "User Account Control" window that pops up.

4. Type the command "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes.

5. Press enter.

6. Close Command Prompt.

MOUNT ISO TO VIRTUAL DRIVE

1. Make sure you have UltraISO installed.

2. Make sure you have a Virtual Drive setup. (Options. Configuration. Virtual Drive tab.)

3. Make sure UltraISO is integrated into windows shell. (Options. Configuration. Integration tab.)

4. Navigate to the iso you want to mount and right click on it. Select UltraISO. Mount to drive.

5. Right click on Virtual Drive letter and select "Eject" when you need to unmount.

We all have a secret passion, and hers was her collection of one hundred and fifty pairs of shoes. With this first confession, a project loaded with functionality and appealing, started to make sense.

This project redefines the concept of dividing wall, and turns this into a storage band that houses a whole personal universe. This band goes all across the dwelling characterizing a number of rooms; hall, living room, kitchen, study and bedroom.

The original layout, which was highly compartmentalized, becomes now void, creating this way a visual and spatial continuity that allows the light coming from the main façade and the two patios to reach all these rooms. Only service rooms stay more private.
Finally, the usage of neutral colours in the finishes, only interrupted by the colour of her personal belongings and furniture, will turn this dwelling into a unique space.

19 Subsidized Dwellings for Young People at the Old Town Center in Lleida / Pàmpols Arquitecte

Pàmpols Arquitecte designed this residential building in the historic center of Lleida, Spain. This brought with it the challenges of doing something new in an area with rich history. Dealing with social housing construction in a old town, grouped and serial, suggests the establishment of parallelisms between simple function tasks and complex purposes, which puts contemporary building housing in a strong need to standardize. Responding to this situation Pàmpols Arquitecte say, “we have sought perfection, harmony, accuracy, and economy of space. All this is not just perfection and harmony, but beauty.” In the proposed architecture, the image of the block is only suggested by the volume of two resounding buildings slipping between them. They define a horizontal movement – the only one possible, given the fragmentary visions of them one could have when approaching, the one over the other, pierced by rows of windows with various fastening systems.

Today, the economic system favors rationalization and normalization on subsidized housing. But, on the other hand, the increase of complexity of our social requirements (singles, single-parent families, elder people, immigration with familiar numerous structures, etc …) reveals that flexibility is required. In the future one will have to attend to both aspects. To achieve this intention, Pàmpols Arquitecte propose a system of skeleton construction as the most opportune solution; provided that it makes possible means of rationalized fixation and, at the same time, the division does not hinder the interior space.

According to this respect, Pàmpols Arquitecte have considered the kitchens and hygienic chambers, given the requirements of its facilities, as fixed cores and that the remaining space could be divided with either mobile furniture or partitions (mobile walls). Depending on the needs of the user, of the type of family who lives there, on the arrival of visitors or of the day / night, leisure / work cycles, space will change, will transform.

All the dwellings are opened both to the street and to the interior space of the court (patio). This character provides them with a suitable crossed ventilation and sun heating, promoted by the descending trays of the section.

Höllviken south of Malmö was originally a seaside resort, but the forested rows of summer houses are continuously being transformed into a carpet of permanent housing. The site is a somewhat complicated corner lot with roads to the north and west.
The client is a middle-aged couple with children who have now left the household. They commissioned a modern and nature-oriented one story house where sensuous qualities were the most important parameters throughout the design process.

The house is angled around an inner garden and, much like the Bergman Werntoft house, rests on the tradition of the Danish atrium house from the 60s and 70s. Three small bedrooms crowd together in the northern wing of the house, while the western wing is a continuous sequence of spaces consisting of a kitchen, dining room, library, living area, and winter garden.

The outer walls along the streets are clad with Pedersen clay bricks working as a screen. During the later part of the day the sun moves to the west of the building. A corner window in the western wing together with a series of openings in the brick screen together create a very different interior light during these hours.

The stucture is a steel-enforced timber frame. Windows and sliding glass doors are made from Schüco aluminum profiles. The front and garage doors are custom made from ammonium smoked oak.

The housing is located in the place from one block from the main street in Osaka’s suburb, and I cannot say it’s calm. There are a lot of different buildings such as an iron factory, an elementary school, and a parking space near the housing.

In this planning, I call the garage in the building site “Light Well” and I deploy the building in L type around the garage. There is only a road in the north side and I intentionally didn’t make a window in this side and planned that all rooms can take lights and air from this “Light Well”. I put Gal-Barium Steel Plate on the road side of the housing and it configures the feature of this housing with wooden doors.

Located in the heart of a new zone in Hangzhou, Jardin de Jade Restaurant will be designed in the concept of “Sweet Osmanthus” (Guihao) – a small simple pattern flower with a delightful fragrant that symbolize a breezy, young and vivacious personality in use to attract the interest of younger group of people.

Applying the concept into the design, the layout plan of the space is designed irregularly with a cashew-shape to create a sense of curiosity. The VIP rooms at the main area are designed as mountain caves described in fairy tales, and together with the metal screen of fish pattern that represents the oriental opulent in river village, it creates a fun and an unforgettable dining experience.

Architectural and interior design services were provided for this 3,400 sqf storefront renovation limited to $25 per square foot. The design organizes the program and re-engages the street through lighting, color and views from the deepest parts of the space.

The design solution focuses on a folded “wrapper” organizing the space into thirds to permit views and admit daylight from the street. The existing building shell is painted white while the “wrapper” is painted red in reference to a bowl of cherries, a trademark topping of the client’s frozen custard.

Aluminum awning windows salvaged from another project were rotated 90 degrees and used as casements to admit north light to the workstations, giving each workstation individual control of daylight and ventilation. Translucent polycarbonate sliding doors define semi-private spaces without sacrificing daylight.

The limited budget directed the solution toward making use of the existing plumbing and mechanical systems, which inspired the “wrapper”. High efficiency fluorescent light fixtures located on top of the wrapper indirectly light the existing tin ceiling. Wall mounted fixtures supplement the indirect lighting on one side and reinforce the perspective from the street, while task lighting is utilized at each workstation.

This 6,000 sqf lobby is located at Alliance Center, a speculative office complex in central Buckhead, just north of downtown Atlanta. The lobby serves Two Alliance, a new office tower already under construction when the design of the lobby was proposed as a means to create a dynamic entrance experience. The plaza space between the One Alliance and Two Alliance towers pours into the generously scaled lobby space by way of a crystalline glass entrance pavilion. The glass pavilion opens onto an elegant light-filled lobby of rich, exotic wood, glistening white terrazzo, an energetic sculpted ceiling and finely crafted detail.

The complex geometries of the ceiling structure and the insertion of the light boxes into the floor invert the traditional ceiling/floor relationship; ceiling as landscape and floor as light. The surface of the floor light boxes is comprised of slip-resistant, laminated translucent glass, which has a 75% light transmittance. There are three shapes of glass panels which are rotated in plan and scattered throughout the lobby in order to evenly light the ceiling above. The up-lights are 150-watt metal halide lamps set twenty inches below the surface of the glass. Two half-inch-thick white metal louver grids (half inch by half inch) are rotated thirty degrees in relation to each other and set beneath the glass. The rotated louvers diffuse the light, reducing the appearance of hot spots on the surface of the glass and preventing direct glare.

Complementary to the up-lights in the floor, the wood wall panels are washed by track-mounted seventy-watt adjustable metal halide lights set in recessed ceiling coves. At the head of the elevator doors, custom stainless steel light fixtures with florescent lamps wash the elevator lobby ceilings.

Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG) achieves the precise geometric intersections of the ceiling. The custom floor-mounted up-lights create a subtle effect on the ceiling and provide enough light to comfortably illuminate the lobby without causing discordance to those passing through.

The materials include Makore wood veneer wall panels, terrazzo floor with zinc divider strips, painted GFRG and gypsum wall board at the ceiling and glass. There are twenty-nine up-lights and thirty lines of zinc divider strips in the floor with three shapes of lights rotated for variety. Of the seventeen lines in the ceiling, six are curved. The ceiling is comprised of forty planes and two hundred and ten points of intersection.

This is a holiday and weekend house on a rural island near Auckland. The owners are an American professional couple who moved to Auckland from a Pittsburgh ‘brownstone’. They have two young adult children, and wanted space for visitors to stay for a few days. They asked for a house which was “ big on ideas rather than budget” , and one that would encourage a different pattern of living from their life in town.

The kitchen-dining-living space is like a camp-site under an awning. It is an informal glazed pavilion between two cedar-clad blocks- which contain the private rooms. The pavilion shows all, while the boxes are veiled and enigmatic.

A great deal of New Zealand life is spent outdoors, so the pavilion opens on both sides to give a choice between a sheltered eastern court up the slope, and a grass hill falling to the western seaward side- from which the prevailing wind often blows.

The main bedroom adjoins the living spaces in one of the cedar boxes, and looks into a private landscape. Less-frequented sleeping spaces are above it, reached by a private stair from the exterior verandah. The upper floor is divided into diminutive cells. Here, latticed shutters give shade from the western sun, security to the sleeping perches, a pixilated view, and shelter from the storm in driving south-westerly weather.

Contradictions abound. The guest rooms are private, but separated only by light screens, perilous- with glass to near bed level, but made safe by the out-sloping shutters. Each is as risky and cosy as a bird’s nest.

The Music room is a “place to think” in one of the client’s words. It is also a place to play live and recorded music, and to read. From here, only a thin slice of the spectacular view is revealed, and only to a seated person looking up from the simple desk, or up from the keyboard of the grand piano. Light comes edgewise across walls and ceiling, and spills from above down a curved wall which also serves to diffuse sound. It is a calm retreat.

Vy Complex is the largest, most comprehensive and most progressive sport facility in the Middle East. Conceptually the spaces and their configuration build up on the notion of energy and well-being, enforced through several internal dynamics such as exchange of natural light and scenographic visual connections, many of which reveal kinetic movements.

The building includes the Main Gym halls, workout studios (5 group studios), semi Olympic pool, semi Olympics flying running track, climbing wall, squash courts, bath and changing rooms, spa, beauty center, Juice bar, Restaurant (250 seats), different retail shops and all support functions including administrative, laundry, maintenance, security and parking.

The overriding sensory perception within Vy is that of invigoration. The halls at Vy were intially designed as social spaces that were then developed to accommodate sport events and not the other way around. The visual conversation within and between the halls took great consideration to ensure inspiring vantage points while visually panning during exercise.

conceptual model

Externally, the building expresses its typology and is unmistakably read as a gym complex. The upper level 200 meter steel structure running track roams through many of the halls overlooking many activities and continues outdoor flying over external spaces and views. Much of the internal activities and motion are also framed as clear visual perspectives inward towards the heart of the building on each façade, while kept bright through the utilization of large areas of skylights.
